The Wairarapa Five Towns Trail is an ambitious project to develop almost 200km of recreational trails for walking and cycling, linking Martinborough, Featherston, Greytown, Carterton and Masterton.
The goal is to grow community wealth through developing outstanding trail-based experiences, and to provide for improved liveability and health outcomes for residents and visitors alike.
From beautiful rivers, towns and villages, culture and heritage, to world class food and beverages, Wairarapa offers untapped potential for a unique visitor experience.
The project aims to bring to life the vision of an internationally recognised network of trails for locals, visitors, and tourists that will grow Wairarapa’s economy and enhance community wellbeing.
he Wairarapa Five Towns Trail is one of 31 key initiatives in the Wellington Regional Economic Development Plan (REDP) - WellingtonNZ. The REDP is a 10 year plan to align resources and effort behind projects with potential for significant economic impact and job growth. The Five Towns Trail also aligns with the Wellington Regional Trails Framework helping walkers, cyclists and horse riders discover trail networks across Wellington Region.
The project is now being led by the Wairarapa Five Towns Trail Trust. The Trust was established with support from WellingtonNZ in June 2024 to lead planning, development, construction, fundraising and marketing of the trail network.
The Board of Trustees are Greg Lang (Chair), Bruce McCallum (Deputy Chair), Joel Ngatuere and Jo Gillanders. There are an additional 3 positions on the board open for Trustee appointments by Masterton, Carterton and South Wairarapa District Councils. The Trustees can be contacted at here (insert email or form?)
